New DGRI One Year Celebration With Baby Sophie

Staff, patients, and visitors gathered this week to mark the first year since the move to the new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

The first baby born at the new hospital, Sophie Dodds, made an appearance with mum Emma Dodds who had been invited to cut a specially designed cake with staff a year to the day the final patient was transferred to the new hospital.

The new £212 million hospital opened on the weekend of the 8th December 2017 with all patients transferred over three days and all services fully operational with business as usual by the 11th December 2017.

Nicole Hamlet, Deputy Chief Operating Officer NHS Dumfries and Galloway said:

“Today marks the first anniversary of the opening of the new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, our district general hospital designed to serve the entire region.

“The weekend of the 8th December saw the successful safe move of 171 patients to the new hospital thanks to our fantastic teams and our partner agencies.

“We opened into one of the most challenging winters the NHS has seen in recent times and our new facility served us well. Crucially it is our teams who ensured we were able to deliver the services our region relies upon and went above and beyond the call of duty.

“This has been a remarkable achievement and one year on with the facility now established we are positive about the future for patients and staff.”

Emma Dodds, mum of Sophie first baby born at the new hospital said:

“I was delighted to be invited with Sophie to be part of the one year celebration today. I was transferred from the former DGRI the day the move began, it was nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time, to be giving birth is a big enough event and to be the first baby born at the new hospital made it a unique experience.

“Being here with NHS staff and in the presence of patients and visitors cutting the cake with staff has made Sophie’s first birthday celebration extra special.”
