SAFE DRIVE STAY ALIVE CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED

SAFE DRIVE STAY ALIVE

Safe Drive Stay Alive has returned to Galloway, with the presentation being delivered to fifth and sixth year pupils from across the area. Performances were held at Town Hall Castle Douglas, Newton Stewart Cinema and The Ryan Centre Stranraer.

The presentation is based around the reconstruction of a Road Traffic Collision (RTC) involving young people which occurred in the Fife area.

The short film is based around a brother and sister who go out a drive with a friend. The driver is distracted resulting in a Road Traffic Collision occurring. As a result the driver escapes with only minor cuts and bruises. However the front and rear seat passenger are less fortunate, with the front seat passenger being seriously injured and the rear seat passenger being pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the injuries sustained.

As the film continues and emergency services arrive on scene the film is paused and local representatives from the Police Scotland Road Policing Unit, the Scottish Ambulance Service, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, NHS Dumfries and Galloway and the Procurator Fiscal Service speak to the audience about their own personal feelings and experiences when dealing with a fatal road traffic collision.

Sergeant Emma Dodds said: “Safe Drive Stay Alive is aimed at young drivers who are learning to drive and those who have recently gained their full driving licence. It highlights to them the responsibilities a driver undertakes when using a vehicle on a road, the potential consequences of a lack of concentration and the possible effects this can have. The event is designed to influence their attitude and future behaviour whilst behind the wheel.”
