The former Harbourmaster’s office in Stranraer is set for repair and extension as part of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s plans to develop the town’s waterfront. The distinctive listed building forms a prominent landmark at the entrance to Stranraer marina and is currently in need of some remedial works to improve the inside and the outside of the building.
Investment by Dumfries and Galloway Council, the Scottish Government and Historic Environment Scotland will enable its restoration and extension as part of the wider regeneration strategy for the town. The setting for the building will also be improved to create a welcoming public space between the town centre and the waterfront.
Our Council is setting out our plans for the old Harbour office (and the rest of the town) at a series of drop in sessions, where there will be an opportunity to view designs for the building and provide comments.
Drop in sessions will be held on;
Tuesday 8 November at Stranraer Library: 2pm to 5pm
Wednesday 9 November at the Ryan Centre, Stranraer: 2pm to 6.30pm
Thursday 10 November at the new Harbourmaster’s Office, Stranraer: 11am to 1pm
Thursday 10 November at the Ryan Centre, Stranraer: 2pm to 6.30pm
Monday 14 November at Stranraer Library: 2pm to 5pm
Chairman of the Council’s Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee Councillor Colin Smyth commented;
“Our Council is fully committed to the regeneration of Stranraer. We agreed the regional economic strategy last year, and Stranraer was right at the heart of this. We secured almost £2million of further funding earlier this year, and have completed extensive works in various parts of the town in recent months, not least the award winning Agnew Park. The former Harbourmasters office is a famous old building in the town, and it is important we utilise its unique and key location to the most effective use in the upcoming years. I would hope that the people of Stranraer come along to our sessions and give us their opinions on how the space should look and feel. We are a listening Council and are committed to building the local economy. We’ll work with the community of Stranraer to regenerate the area in a way that locals want.”
