Hill Walker Rescued Off Criffel After Slipping On Ice

At 16:23 on Wednesday 17th January 2024 Moffat Mountain Rescue Team was asked by Police Scotland Dumfries & Galloway to assist in the Rescue of an injured walked on Criffel near New Abbey.

The walker had slipped on the ice and sustained a suspected broken ankle.  11 team members from Moffat MRT responded to the Callout with an initial party of 2 team members attending the casualty’s location to complete an initial assessment and provide warm kit.

They were then joined by a further 2 team members with a casualty bag and medical equipment to allow a full assessment of the injury.  The team were able to provide strong pain relief, splint the affected limb and keep the casualty warm in a casualty bag whilst the casualty’s party were accompanied off the hill safely.

Due to the icy conditions and the need for further team members to assist with the stretcher evacuation Galloway Mountain Rescue Team were also asked to attend.  4 team members from Galloway and a further 4 team members from Moffat carried a stretcher, wheel and a back rope up to the casualty’s location where the teams were then able package the casualty into stretcher ready for evacuation.

The casualty was then carried from the hillside to a waiting Scottish Ambulance Service vehicle to be conveyed to hospital for further assessment.

We wish them all the best in their recovery!
