One Month To Go Until Gold Fever Hits Moffat

There is only 1 month to go until The World Gold Panning Championships 2017 arrives in Moffat. This international sporting event will attract gold panners and prospectors from around the world, and competitors from over 20 countries are expected to take part. 2017 marks the 25th anniversary since the championships were last held in Scotland, and is the first opportunity that the town of Moffat has had to host this exciting annual event.

Children’s entertainers will be onsite each day of the competition including Daffy Dill & Jason the Juggler so there will be plenty of fun and frolics. Mostly Ghostly Investigations will be providing their new ghost tour entitled “The Dark Tales of Old Moffat” on 10th, 11th and 12th August 2017. In addition visitors will be able to buy tickets to hear a brand new talk entitled Gold n’ Ghosts where people can discover a hoard of ghostly tales from the colourful history of gold-mining. Live entertainment will also be available most evenings in the main marquee, including music from the Mairs Family, Clan Blues, Scocha, Awry, and Iain Anderson and his Ceilidh band.

Richard Deighton, Chair of Moffat Gold 2017 SCIO, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the championships to the beautiful town of Moffat, and a very warm welcome will be extended to all competitors arriving here from around the world.” “A comprehensive programme of entertainment and activities for all age groups has been arranged to complement the gold panning competitions.” “There will be a free gold panning school every day to demonstrate how to use a gold pan to help those that have never tried the sport before.”

Stuart Turner, Head of EventScotland, said: “With just a month to go until Scotland welcomes the World Gold Panning Championships, excitement continues to grow with competitors from around the world preparing for their visit to Moffat. Scotland is the perfect stage for events and the Championships, with its thrilling competition and complementary programme of family entertainment, promises to be an exciting and memorable event. ”

The event is supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council, EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate, the SSE Clyde Community Fund, and Minelab, and will celebrate Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017.
