Young Musicians from across the Region Perform at The Southwest Rotary Young Musician Competition

The Southwest Area heat of the Rotary Young Musician Competition took place in Annan Academy on 14th February. There were performances from 11 young musicians, 6 in the Voice section and 5 in the Instrumental.

The singers performed pieces from musicals, opera and jazz and all were excellent. They represented 6 of the Rotary Clubs in our SW Area. The winner of this section was Catriona McArthur from Lockerbie who sang 2 operatic arias.  Callen Love from Dumfries came second singing “Stars” from “Les Miserable “ and “Some Enchanted Evening”.

There were 5 entrants in the Instrumental section playing piano, drums, saxophone and marimba; a widely varying programme of excellent quality. The winner was Callum Waldron from Annan playing mesmerising pieces on Marimba. John Rodger from Kirkcudbright was runner up.

The judges, Alex McQuiston and Noriko Moffat, said they had an extremely difficult job, and had to take into account the different stages of development of the young musicians’ musical careers.

The four finalists will now go on to compete in Edinburgh on 10th March at the District final.
