Castle Douglas Lego Fair Helps Support Children with Autism

The Better Lives Partnership, a Scottish registered charitable organisation that supports young people with autism spectrum disorder and their families in Dumfries and Galloway  have teamed up with Dumfries Lego Fairs to bring you a great day out for all the family! They will have Lego stalls, toy stalls, craft stalls, kids play area and so much more!

The young people of Better Lives Partnership are providing the ‘Better Lives Pop up Cafe’ where they will be selling soup, sandwiches, kids lunch boxes, hot & cold drinks, home baking & and a tuck shop!

Carolyn Kennedy, Employability Team Officer at The Better Lives Partnership said

As part of the Enterprise unit of the projects, the young people have been engaging in various enterprise activities, developing their knowledge and understanding of what makes a person an entrepreneur and the various tasks involved in running a business. In 2017, the young people supported the project’s launch night and in November they engaged in making products to sell at two local Christmas fayres.
Using the skills learnt from previous events, the young people are now supporting Dumfries Lego Fairs to host an event at Castle Douglas Town Hall on the 21st of April, 10am – 3pm. Regarding the event the young people held an initial meeting with Knut, of the Dumfries Lego Fair, to enquire about previous events and how to best contribute to an event on a larger scale. Following this meeting the young people have designed leaflets and posters, contacted local sellers, requested donations and discounts and hired out Castle Douglas Town Hall. To ensure the best deals were made the young people have researched costings, typed up relevant letters and contacted local businesses.
The primary focus is to run a pop-up café. As a small charity, we have limited funds available. In addition, we at the project would like to enquire if you or your company would like to donate items for a raffle to be held on the day of the event.”

Carolyn continued “These young people are achieving amazing feats, such as communication with others, writing formal letters and engaging successfully in a classroom environment, skills that can cause huge anxiety and frustration, for those on the Autism Spectrum. The next stage for the young people is to showcase the knowledge and understanding learned and the skills developed, over the last nine months to host their own event at their end of year celebration, on 28th June within our own premises.
