Museums Galleries Scotland and Dumfries Museum will be hosting an online event to pay tribute to the life of Dr Flora Murray on Tuesday 14 March 2023, from 6.30 to 8.30pm.
This event is a part of the ongoing effort by both institutions to commemorate and celebrate the legacy of this trailblazing woman.
Dr Flora Murray was a pioneering surgeon, a member of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), and co-founded the Endell Street Military Hospital with her partner Louisa Garrett Anderson during World War One.
For the first time, her portrait and associated artefacts will be displayed in her hometown of Dalton, near Dumfries, as part of a larger exhibition set to open in May. The painting of Dr Murray has been featured on the Bank of Scotland’s £100 note since its release in 2022 and was loaned by the Royal Free Hospital Charity.
This event for Women’s History Month will feature four different speakers:
- Judith Hewitt, Curator of Dumfries Museum
- Wendy Moore, award winning author of ENDELL STREET: The Trailblazing Women who ran World War One’s Most Remarkable Military Hospital
- Sarah Paterson, curator First World War and Early 20th Century, Imperial War Museum, on Dr Flora Murray and the Women’s Work Collection
- DJ McDowall, Creative Director, The Imaginarium / LGBTQ+ Activist / Producer of StoryTrails: Dumfries’ Augmented Reality app, featuring Dr Flora Murray.
Attendees can participate in this online tribute to the life of Dr Flora Murray, a remarkable woman who remains an inspiration to this day, on Tuesday 14 March 2023 from 6.30 to 8.30pm. Places are limited and can be booked now to learn more about this pioneering suffragette, surgeon, and daughter of Dumfries.
A full exhibition on her incredibly impactful and inspiring life will be opening in May.
