160th Anniversary Show and Sale of Store Cattle Held at Wallets Marts

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Ltd held their special 160th Anniversary Show and Sale of Store Cattle at Castle Douglas on Monday 1st August.  This has always been one of the feature sales at Castle Douglas and with this being Wallets 160th year in business it was a fitting event to mark this milestone.  At the pre-sale show the judge Mr Bruce Watt, Cairntack found the overall champion with a Limousin bullock from Messrs Sharp, Barscarrow, Sandhead.  Scaling 608kg in made £1290 to W Purdon & Partners, Straven House.  Champion single heifer came from Messrs Lockhart, Culdoach whose Charolais entry weighed 428kgs and made £1055 to Tom Clark, Westmuir.  Culdoach also had the champion pen of 4 cattle with a pen of 446kgs Charolais bullocks which sold for £1050 to Bruce Watt, Cairntack.  Cattle in general were well grazed and in great bloom with a larger percentage of heavier cattle forward.  Outwith the show cattle bullocks topped at £1370 for the first beast through the ring from Messrs T Robb, Trolane, Dalry.  Top price per kg in the bullock section was 266.9p paid to Glenlee Farms, Shiel for a pen of Limousins.  In the heifer section the top price of £1235 was paid to R Rankine, Mains of Cairnbrock for a Simmental cross.  Top price per kg was 272.2p paid to M & G Barr, Meikle Kirkland for a pen of Charolais crosses.  With 200 more cattle sold than the same sale last year overall average was down £38 on the year to level at £928.84.  550 bullocks sold to average £217.95p per kg or £968.21 at 444 kgs with 247 heifers averaging 209.6p or £841.19 at 401 kgs.

In the OTM ring all classes of cattle traded dearer on the previous sale.  Cows topped at 144p or £981.40 off Culnaightrie whilst bulls sold to 164p off Glenturk.  Overall sale average was 118.55p.
