SALE OF BLUEFACED LEICESTER RAMS
Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited on Wednesday 22nd September staged their, now, annual sales fixture of Draft Blackface Ewes and Gimmers followed by the 33rd Annual Sale of Blueface Leicester Rams held on behalf of the Bluefaced Leicester Sheep Breeders Association. This continued format drew a large audience with quality sheep in all sections being a smashing trade and the easiest to sell.
Commencing with the Draft Ewes they were a nice trade throughout with strong ewes very easily sold and on a par with last year whereas high hill ewes in some instances would be slightly less on the year resulting in an overall sale average of £107.73 (-£1.85) for 2001 sold. Top today was a pen of four smashing ewes from Messrs Murdoch Knockdon Straiton realising £225
Onto the gimmers and like the ewes the best were easily sold with some hill gimmers struggling to match last year’s extreme rates this resulted in an average of £155.02 (-£10.60) for 191 more sold. Topping this section was a single sparky gimmer from Messrs Burns Craignell she realised £600.
Now to the tups and huge thanks to the sponsors Tarff Valley and today’s judge Jack Kay Hartside Lammermuir. A fine show of shearlings and ram lambs were forward with the champion being found in the first prize shearling from Robert Mcturk Barlaes. This boy was an oustanding example of what is required as well as having presence style and character he had the body to match being correct in every way. Backing his judgement, the judge went to £9200 to secure his services. Reserve was a stonker of a ram lamb from Messrs Fallows Burnton this lad fetched £3000 to Messrs Murdoch Fleminghill.
