Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their fortnightly cattle sale on Monday 27th March 2017 when they sold 423 cattle.
Whilst the exceptional weather may have kept some of the regular spectators at home it did not reflect on the trade in the slightest. Some sellers are taking advantage of the buoyant trade and coming forward earlier than previous years and despite selling at lesser weights they are still going away with larger cheques. Well bred young cattle at 10 – 11 months were once again in particular demand although in general the younger cattle were a plainer show overall than our previous sale. At the other end of the scale larger, older cattle that have looked best value throughout the early sales were markedly dearer.
Topping the sale at £1275 were Simmental cross bullocks from Cardoness & Kings Laggen, Cardoness. Next up jointly at £1230 were Limousin crosses from Glenhowl, Glenluce and Barscarrow, Sandhead. Top price per kg in the bullock section was 273p paid to R Wallace & Co, Mains of Colloin for a pen of seven Limousins. Mains of Collin then sold their next pen of seven Limousin at 272p, their next pen of six at 266p and their next pen of seven at 261p. Overall average for bullopcks levelled at 229.5p or £981.15
The heifer section topped at £1140 for Limousins from Mains of Collin. This was followed at £1130 and £1100 for two pens of Limousin crosses from Glenhowl, Glenluce. Top price per kg for heifers of 251.7p was paid to P Dawson, Kirkland for a pen of Limousin crosses. Next up at 250p per kg was a pen of Charolais crosses from Poldean. Overall averages in the heifer section levelled at 222.4p per kg or £865.40
