Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited in association with the Salers Cattle Society staged the 25th Annual Show and Sale of Pedigree and Commercial Cattle at Castle Douglas on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th November 2016.

The Show, kindly sponsored by Farmer Guardian drew a vast audience of breeders and enthusiasts from throughout the country.  Judging the event this year was Mr Murray Lyle who runs the Strathallan herd of Salers as well as the Logenbar herd of Charolais cattle.  He found his overall champion in Lot 42, Cleuchhead Kingpin from R & K Livesey.  This March 2015 born bull was also Male Champion and Junior Male Champion and went on to smash UK breed record price when it sold for 11,000 guineas to AJ & C Colgen, Lowick Farm, Lowick.  Female Champion came in the form of Cumbrian Cammella, a May 2014 In-Calf heifer from Farmstock Genetics, Selkirk which sold for 2500 guineas to WN & I Douglas Catslackburn, Yarrow.  Pedigree Heifers topped at 4000 guineas for Cuil Kylie, a January 2015 in calf heifer from Colin McClymont which sold to F C Robinson, Highfields.

The commercial section also drew great interest once again and with numbers being well short of buyer’s requirements trade was buoyant throughout.  The champion pen in this section was awarded to first time seller Mr A R Lee, Lumbylaw, Edingham for a pen of six Salers X South Devon bulling heifers which made £1880 to Neil Barclay, Harestanes.  Reserve Champion Pen came from Rusko Farms whose pen of five made £1400 to Mr Anderson, Strocherie.  A feature of the sale was the annual consignment of 52 Salers X heifers from Messrs McClymont, Cuil which topped at £1600 for two pen of five and averaged £1393.46.
