TOP NOTCH LINE UP OF SPEAKERS FOR DAIRY OPEN DAY IN DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

Chairman of Dairy Growth Board amongst those who will speak

NFU Scotland is inviting farmers from across the country, in particular those with an interest in dairy, to the Wigtownshire Branch Open day when high-profile speakers will take to the floor.

Rory Christie and his family who farm 1,500 Jersey cross Fresian cows, will host the day at Dourie Farm in Port William on Wednesday 24 September when he will be demonstrating why he believes in milk solids production, and that growth should not be feared.

Speakers confirmed for the event are: Paul Grant, chairman of the Scottish Dairy Growth Board; Stuart Martin from the Dairy Hub; NFU Scotland’s Milk Policy Manager George Jamieson; and NFU Scotland’s Vice President Rob Livesey.

There will be the opportunity for a tour of the farm which operates a New Zealand grazing system without housing. The cows on Dourie Farm are low yielding but produce high quality milk.

NFU Scotland Vice President, Rob Livesey commented: “It is good to see a place with a different mindset, an enterprise that chooses to lead the pack rather than follow the norm.

“The Christies are quite unique in their unconventional and positive approach, drawing on the best aspects of the highly successful New Zealand dairy sector and adapting these along with the best UK and Scottish innovative approaches, to operate successfully today. This has permitted the business to continue growing and to employ a significant number of people, stimulating the local economy.

“Dourie Farm is a refreshing enterprise for others to go and visit. Some may find this different approach to dairy farming challenging yet others will be inspired to view new possibilities in a different light.”

Rory Christie commented: “It is important that we have confidence to grow our businesses during these uncertain times. It will be great to hear from Paul Grant on how the dairy industry can stay on track with long-term planning during this volatile period, and to have an understanding of where the market can grow to meet future supply.”

For farmers wishing to attend, they should call 0131 472 4000 to reserve their place, or text Dourie Farm Open day with their name and number to 07718 425 053.
