STORE TRADE WAS BUOYANT AT WALLETS MARTS THIS WEEK

MONDAY 11TH APRIL 2016

OTM & STORE CATTLE SALE

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their fortnightly sale of cattle on Monday 11th April 2016 when they sold 610 Store Cattle and 45 OTM Cattle

Store Cattle continued to meet a buoyant demand with the usual compliment of buyers round the ringside.  As in previous sales the older, stronger cattle looked better value than the younger stirks.  In general cattle were a plainer quality show and whilst the averages are back on the last sale the true picture is that the trade is not any cheaper than it has been in the past here at Castle Douglas.  Topping the sale at £1210 was an outstanding Limousin Heifer from C Birrell & Co, Barnboard selling to J & L Craik, Waterside.  Bullocks topped at £1120 for Limousin crosses from Cardoness and Kings Laggan.  Top price per kg was 263.3p paid to D W Clement & Son, Gatehouse Farm for a pen of Charolais bullocks whilst heifers topped at 259.8p for Limousin crosses from Barnboard.  Overall averages saw the bullocks level at 213.3p or £856.76 – this included 142 native bred bullocks – whilst heifers levelled at 204.79p or £808.40.

A plainer show of OTM cattle with over 50% of the sale being dairy cows met a useful trade selling to a top of 134p for a British Blue from Barnboard.  Overall average for 45 OTM cattle sold was 89.58p
