WALLETS Marts Castle Douglas Limited sold Store and OTM Cattle at their fortnightly sale on Monday 24th April 2017.
With this being the biggest spring sale held in the region now, a catalogue entry of 1034 cattle were presented to a packed ringside of bidders from as far afield as Radcliffe in the south to Methlick in the North. The large catalogue drew many new buyers to the sale. Whilst buyers were in abundance sellers were delighted with the trade which ensued.
Topping the sale at £1365 was an outstanding Limousin cross heifer which scaled 590kgs and was assigned by C Birrell & Co, Barnboard. Bullocks topped at £1270 twice for Charolais crosses weighing 558kgs and 552kgs from J & S Ross & Son, Romesbeoch. Yearling cattle met an animated demand topping at 296.2p per kg for a pen of 6 Charolais selling for £945 per head from Meikle Kirkland. Native bred yearlings were also very much in favour topping at £1060 from Garrarie and Cogarth. Top price per kg in the heifer section was 272.4ppaid to W J Davidson, Poldean for a pen on Charolais crosses.
Sale averages were the highest recorded for some considerable time with bullocks averaging 249.84p per kg (+ 25.84p on last year) and heifers averaging 233.44p per kg (+22.24p on last year). Overall average for the whole sale averaged 243.82p or £907.76 per head (+ £73.77 on last year).
OTM Cattle were also a big trade topping at £147p per kg for a Simmential cross cow from Kenmure, Kirkcowan and to £912.42 for a Hereford cross from High Barlay. Cast Bulls topped at 122p for a Charolais from Barnbackle and £1362 per head for another Charolais from the same home. OTM cattle averaged 126.4p per kg.

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited on Tuesday 25th April 2017 had forward 5 Spring lambs, 373 Prime hoggs and 162 Cast Sheep.
373 prime hoggs sold to average 166.64ppkg (SQQ 172ppkg). All classes except lightweights which were well fleshed would be cheaper. Topping today was Beltex hoggs from Miss J Cowie, Copelaw, Gatehouse at £83. Topping per kilo were lightweight Texels from Southwick Farms at 196.1p.
First Spring lambs of the season sold to £90 for 2 Zwartbles from Messrs Duffy, The Smithy, Dunragit.
162 Cast ewes looked sharper especially for lean ewes. Top today was £127 for a Suffolk Ram from Edgarton with ewes to £90 for a Rouge from Meikle Cloak. Blackface ewes to £60 from Beoch, Loch Doon.
