BLACK DAY FOR STEWARTRY AT GREENLAW

Saturday’s game at Greenlaw, Castle Douglas was for a place in the second round of the West Region Shield between two unbeaten teams this season. Allan Glens sit top of Tennent’s West One with Stewartry in second place.

This was cup tie that saw ten tries scored and  loads of action for the large support to enjoy.

Stewartry kicked off in the sunshine and from a first line out win saw the Blacks take the game into the Glens half but after a frantic start from both teams it was a first interception in five minutes which saw  a Glens forward race in to score at the posts. The easy conversion was added.

Stewartry were soon to reply with Kerr and Muir winning a penalty in ten minutes captain John Picken converting the award. 3-7.

The restart went into touch and the Blacks again had good ball which saw Andrew Picken released down the middle to win a penalty. John Picken added another three points.

Eight minutes later and a breakaway try down the left wing quickly followed by a similar one down the right wing minutes later and Stewartry were reeling.One was converted and Glens had moved onto 19-6.

Not to be outdone Stewartry continued to have most of the possession resulting in Andrew Picken scoring in the corner. The conversion missed.

As Stewartry got closer Glens left winger once again jinked his way through the gaps to score his second try and the conversion was added. 26-11 to Glens.

Alan Glens were keeping the score board ticking over but Stewartry continued to play catchup with a good supply of possession and resulted in John Muir scoring in the corner. J Picken added what were to be the Blacks last points in the game.

A further two glens tries before half time one when playing with fourteen men after a yellow card saw a halftime score 40-18 to Allan Glens.

Soon after the restart it was game over as the Glens left winger again broke free to score in the corner for his hat trick of tries.

Both teams battled hard and with six minutes to play Allan Glens completed the rout with an eighth try and conversion to finish comfortable winners 54-18.

This week it is back to Tennent’s West One League business with East Kilbride the visitors to Greenlaw and a 3.00pm kick off.

On Sunday the Stewartry Sirens are away to Broughton this week with a 2.00pm kick off in Edinburgh
