Fourteen teams from Annandale and Eskdale Primary schools attended the 11th annual Annandale and Eskdale Netball Festival held at Hecklegirth Primary School on Wednesday 15 June. The event forms part of the annual PEPAS calendar and was kindly sponsored by Magnox Limited.
The event, run by the Council’s Active Schools and Community Sport Team saw over 140 pupils competing in either the small or large schools event to see who would walk away with the trophies.
After a closely contested final the small schools event was won by the Canonbie A team with runners-up St Columba’s Primary and Cummertrees finished in third place. The large schools event saw the Hecklegirth team triumph over the Newington B team who took second place followed by the Newington A team in third place.
Umpires on the day were Bethany Hutton and Kayleigh Proudfoot of Dumfries Blues Netball club, Janet Williams from Moffat Netball club and Annan Academy teacher Miss Muir. This year the umpires presented awards to Sommer Dean from Eaglesfield Primary in the small schools section and to Drew Ross from Lochmaben Primary took the large schools section for their sportsmanship, effort and general all round good play.
Councillor Ronnie Ogilvie, Chair of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee commented;
“Well done to all the girls taking part in this annual event and my congratulations to the winning teams. Our Council places great emphasis on giving children the best start in life, and events like this allow us to takes steps towards achieving this. It is great to see such a large turnout of teams represented from various schools across the district and our thanks to Magnox Limited for all their support to local events and to Hecklegirth Primary for once again hosting the festival.”
The trophies, medals and certificates were presented by Karen Bratton from Magnox Limited who stated;
“It was a great event to watch and the standard of play from all the girls was excellent. I would like to congratulate all the girls involved on showing great determination, team spirit and enthusiasm for the game.”
