Brockwell Stars In A tense Finish at Clydesdale – Cricket News

Dumfries 1st XI, Your Move Dumfries, were involved in a tense finish to their Western Premier  League match at Clydesdale in Glasgow on Saturday.

Dumfries chose to bat first and Scott Beveridge and Robert McBride batted together to steer  the side up towards the fifty mark and at ten overs the score had reached 36 for 1.  However Beveridge was caught for the scorers’ favourite score of the day of 26 and McBride was bowled for 18.

After youth debuts the previous weeks this time the first team debut was for James Cox and he put some substance into the middle order with, again, 26. However the introduction of Kasim Farid removed him caught and bowled, 70 for 4 after eighteen overs.  The innings was stuttering. Alan Davidson added some runs before he was also caught and bowled by Farid and batting at eight Tommy McGrath contributed a valuable 20.

However Farid finished with five wickets as Dumfries were bowled out for just 144 and were also not able to bat out the overs which arguably was to prove a factor later in the game.

In the Clydesdale innings James Hobman and Danny Armstrong opened the bowling for Dumfries. Armstrong struck first removing Clydesdale’s skipper, Barbour, lbw for 17, for 43 for 1. Tommy McGrath came on as first change as skipper Chris McCutcheon sought the bowlers for the conditions and the situation of a rapid run rate.

It was the introduction of the spin of Chris Brockwell that turned the game for Dumfries. He removed the opener lbw and immediately got another wicket bowled, 68 for 3, with just eleven overs gone.

Brockwell removed Jawad for 20, caught Hobman, and then number three Gould was caught by McGrath also off him for the Clydesdale top score of, again, 26.  He took yet another wicket and the home side were 106 for 6 and still needed just under forty.

Farid and Cairns had a mini-stand but keeper Williams caught the latter off Armstrong and then Brockwell bowled Farid for 20 to leave 15 runs required and two wickets left.

However the ninth wicket pair managed that for an anxious two wicket win for Clydesdale and Dumfries were left regretting the runs left in their first innings.

The Bob Murray Dumfries Player of the Match award went, not suprisingly, to Chris Brockwell with the outstanding figues of 6 wickets for 31 runs. Your Move Dumfries next play away at West of Scotland on Saturday.
