Brydekirk Man Brings Amputee Football to Dumfries and Galloway

Thanks to Brydekirk born Brain Murray who now lives in Eastriggs, near Annan  lost his leg to cancer when he was just 10 years old Annan Athletic FC in partnership Everton FC are delighted to announce that they will be holding a football day aimed purely at Amputee football and people with congenital deficiencies.
Amputee ‘Brian Murray’ lost his leg to cancer 36 years ago when he was 10 years old, Brian tells DGWGO about how he coped and now all these years later is still playing football.

“When you are so so young you learn to just accept these sort of things. I wasn’t going to give up on my football so I played with my friends from Brydekirk, Dumfries and Galloway using my crutches and I rode a bike with one leg,  then as I hit my teenage years I became more self conscious of my leg and was hardly ever seen without my artificial leg on. A few years ago I saw an article in a magazine at my clinic in Edinburgh about amputee football, so I contacted them, unfortunately there wasn’t anything setup in Scotland at that time. Last year they invited me down to a  session at Manchester City’s training ground and I started playing for Everton amputees. I have now been down a few times to play but unfortunately I can’t go to their training as it is on a Wednesday night for 1 hour and half, so they wanted to do something for me and asked if there was anywhere up here where they could have a training session with me.  I contacted Annan Athletic FC and they were really up for it.  Everton amputees decided to make it an open training session to try and give other Scottish and Cumbrian amputees a chance to play. At the age of 46 I never thought I would be playing the sport I love so I would encourage everyone to try it.

If you know anyone who would like to get involved or just come and see what’s involved then the session will take place at Galabank on Saturday 13th February,11am-1PM.
