D&G Teenager ‘Sophie’, Bound for Denmark and World Junior Curling Championships

Dumfries and Galloway Lass  Sophie Jackson who is currently a student studying at Ayr SRUC  recent success at the Scottish Junior Curling Championships means she will soon be Copenhagen bound to compete in the World Junior Competition representing Scotland.
Sophie (19), from Dumfries, studying for a degree in Sports Coaching and Development at the Ayr Campus, was in her first season as skip when her rink took their National title in Aberdeen at the Scottish Junior Curling Champions 2016 on 30-31 January.
Team Jackson (Sophie, Naomi Brown, Rachael Halliday and Rachel Hannen) met team Murray (Katie Murray, Rebecca Morrison, Hailey Duff and Mili Smith) in a tight final match in Aberdeen. After three ends it was 1-1 then Sophie Jackson got a perfect final draw to score 2, but Murrays rink scored 1 in both the next two ends. The scores stayed even until the ninth end when team Jackson made good use of a corner guard to score 2, giving them a 7-5 lead which they maintained at the final end.
Before the World Junior Curling Championships (5-13 March) Sophie will also be competing closer to home in the Scottish Ladies Championships in Perth from 14 – 20 February.
Commenting on her forthcoming championships games Sophie said: “I am really delighted and excited to be competing at the World Championships. Hopefully we can produce some similar results like we did at the juniors recently. Our main focus will be to put out some good team performances in preparation for next month.”
Congratulating Sophie and her team, Sports Programme Leader at SRUC’s Ayr Campus Drew Wallace said: “Sophie works extremely hard at her curling and her university work. This success is well deserved and everyone here at SRUC is extremely proud of her.”
