DGWGO Weekly Rugby Round-up 1/2/24

This weeks DGWGO rugby round-up of brought to you in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Rugby podcast brings you all the local rugby news from the last Weekend of January 2024, including news from Dumfries Women’s RFC, The Annan Warriors, Newton Stewart RFC, Dumfries Saints, Stewartry RFC, Langholm RFC and Moffat Rams.

Dumfries Women won their opening game of the National Bowl competition with a 25-5 victory over Greenock Wasps. Two tries each from Annabelle Hiddleston and Abby Tait and a score from Tasha Humpries gave Richard Kuehnel’s side their first win in a full 15-a-side match.

Annan Warriors also got off to a winning start in the National Shield through scorers Hannah Paterson x2, Nicole Barlow and Lexie Glendinning to give them a 24-5 win over Dunfermline.

Newton Stewart went in search of their first-ever away win against Stew Mel but fell just short in Edinburgh 28-25 in Scottish National 2.

The story was much the same for Paddy Coupar’s Dumfries Saints who made the long trip up to Orkney but let the game slip away from them in the closing stages to lose the game 27-21.

Despite tries from TJ McCarney, Archie Picken, Archie Nicolson, Steven Hogg and Robert
Austin, 32 points were not enough to see Stewartry grab the win over Whitecraigs away from home as it settled with 45-32 the final score.

Linlithgow maintained their unbeaten record in East 1 with a convincing 35-5 win over mid-table Langholm.

Moffat were the only Men’s side in Dumfries & Galloway to come away with a positive result
after beating Hyndland 36-12 at home. Max Douglas x2, David Sloan x2, and one each from Scott Galloway and Ali Dodd secured all 5 points for the Rams.

Fixtures this weekend:
Stewartry Sirens v Dundee Valkyries
Dumfries Saints Women v Cumnock
Broughton v Shire Women
Greenock Wanderers v Stewartry
