Driving Forward Future Dumfries and Galloway Golfers

Stranraer Golf Club have been working in collaboration with Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club, ClubGolf Scotland, the Active Schools and Community Sport team and Stranraer Academy Sports Leaders to host the first ever Primary 5 Golf festival which took place at Stranraer Golf Club on Thursday 17th and 24th September. With the aim of having fun in an enjoyable, interesting and safe environment, children in primary 5 from schools in the Stranraer Cluster were introduced to the great game of golf.

1 a 1 a golf 2Eleven primary schools took part in the festival and were welcomed at Stranraer Golf Club before they were split into their different groups, MiIroy Marvels, Fowler Fabbies and Wie Wonders. Each group then took part in 3 different activities – fun putting, chipping and pitching which were held within different parts of the golf course, allowing children to experience the joy of golf. Each station was delivered by PGA Level 1 Golf Coaches and assisted by Sports Leaders from Stranraer Academy where children learned the different skills of golf in a fun way.

All the activities the children took part in are activities that are available at both Stranraer Golf Club and Portpatrick Club through their junior golf coaching programmes which start around Easter time and run through the summer months until mid-September. Both clubs are associated to ClubGolf Scotland and have fully Professional Golf Association qualified coaches. The clubs welcome any children who would like to take part in further sessions to get in touch, there is no need to be a club member and both clubs provide clubs and equipment to suit all ages and abilities.

The golf festival was highly enjoyed by all children who took part and thanks must be given to Stranraer Golf Club and Dunskey Golf 1 a 1 a golf 1Club for offering and delivering this fantastic opportunity.

Tom McAughtrie, Chair of the Community and Customer Services Committee, said, “The brilliant cooperation between the different organisers has allowed children that have never played golf to get a feel for the wonderful sport. The golf festival was highly enjoyed by all the children who took part and thanks must be given to organisers for offering and delivering this fantastic opportunity. This golf festival has not only supported these youngsters in being healthy and active a main priority for our Council, but also showed them that physical activity is fun and hopefully made them want to play golf on a regular basis.”
