Dumfries Cricket Club Round-up – Scotland debut for Max

Dumfries junior Max C orbett-Byers made his debut for Scotland last week in victories for Scotland U15s in their ECB County Cup games against Northumberland and Durham played at Nunholm.

He was his side’s top scorer with an innings of 36 in their subsequent game against Cumbria doing his local sponsor Moduals proud. Another Dumfries player getting their first call up is Emma Fordyce for the Scotland U15s Girls tour next week. She joins Niamh Muir as one of three Western Warriors players in the named Scotland squad.

On Saturday, in the Western Premier League, Your Move Dumfries produced a useful bowling performance to dismiss the second top side Ferguslie for a total of 222 at Nunholm. Skipper Chris McCutcheon led the way by claiming four wickets, aided by two each from Tommy McGrath and Scott Beveridge. Chris Brockwell and Alan Davidson also bowled tightly, and with a wicket apiece. However a century innings of 109 by professional Riyaad Henry provided more than half the runs off the bat for the visitors. In reply Dumfries continued to lack a substantial match winning innings. Western Warriors bowlers Ghaffar and Henry did the damage with two top order wickets each and the home side could only reach ninety nine in the second innings.

There was a similar scenario in the Borders T20 Final on Sunday with home professional Indrasiri top scoring for Gala with 53 and reducing the Dumfries innings down to a ‘Hundred’ ball innings with four overs for just three runs. A youthful Dumfries side gained some future Lords experience in struggling with the famous Gala slope as the home side set a total of 144. Chris Brockwell took two wickets and Andrew Dawson and Danny Armstrong held on to two good high catches down the hill.  Youngsters Max Corbett-Byers and Sean Thornely batted well but Dumfries fell short on the boundary count in a reply of 103 for 8.

Dumfries U13s were on course for a good competitive tussle at home against Carlisle on Friday after a total of 122 for 6, with Harith Hassan and Munro Cubbon both retiring on 33 not out. However that was before a downpour meant that the fixture has been rescheduled for this Friday.

Nunholm newcomers were prominent in an enjoyable Sunday XI game against Lanercost with Matt Pickstock economical with six overs for just ten runs and Basit Munir taking his first wickets, two, plus two catches. Captain Mat William once again was the batting stalwart with a top score of 48 as the side fell short chasing 193 for 6.
