Croma Vigilant Dumfries in Wobbly Win

Kilmarnock 119 all out v Croma Vigilant Dumfries 120 for 7

Croma Vigilant Dumfries opened their League campaign with victory over Kilmarnock.

On a cold but beautiful spring morning the Dumfries team arrived early in preparation for the 2019 season. Nunholm was looking beautiful as ever as the home side were asked to take to the field.

Opening up for the home side were the man of the match Scott Beveridge and Christopher McCutcheon. Early wickets fell as the home side gained an early control which continued with tight bowling from overseas Professional Tapiwa Mufudza and amateur Declan Brooks. The away side were bowled out for a below par 119.

The pattern of the match continued and wickets steadily fell throughout the Dumfries innings, leaving Dumfries wobbling at 40 for 4. Mufudza launched a quick counter attack to give the home side some needed momentum and confidence. However it was Beveridge and Alan Davidson who batted with control and the knowledge of how to chase a target down. The strong partnership was just about enough until man of the match Beveridge tried to hit a maximum to win the game in style only to be out caught at long-on.

The funny moment of the match was Davidson’s attempted reverse sweep to win the match!

Man of the Match: Scott Beveridge

Super Stuart on Saturday

Nunholm 192 for 5 v Partick 121 all out

Nunholm travelled to Partick on Saturday and came away with an unlikely victory against the 2018 unbeaten league champions.

Nunholm lost the toss and were put into bat and a loss of an early wicket had the team feeling an element of Deja vu was about to hit as Wests ground still holds the team’s lowest ever score of just 56 runs. However Sean Thornely, promoted up the order, established a solid start with opener Mat Williams. The opening bowlers thought that they would end their spell wicket-less, until Thornely left a ball which took out his off stump. Andrew Reed joined Williams at the middle and the pair dug out a solid and safe display taking the score past the 100 mark. Reed began to attack and following hitting a six he eventually fell, caught behind for 44. Williams continued to be the rock as Ronan Dunbar was given freedom to swing and hit a quickfire 37not out. Williams then fell for 30, which left Callum Reynolds-Lewis to strike some nice shots and Nunholm finished with 192 for Partick to chase.

After a good West of Scotland feed, the opening bowlers were inspired. Stuart Alexander struck in the first over and Callum Reynolds-Lewis also got through the batsman’s defence and smashed over the stumps. Overs 3 and 4 saw a repeat as Alexander and Reynolds picked up another wicket each. Partick were reeling with the scoreboard at 4 runs, 4 overs, 4 wickets. A change of approach from the batsmen saw a more solid display, but it only delayed the wickets as Alexander struck again getting a snick behind to keeper Reed. The following ball was a repeat, as Alexander got another edge to Reed. Bowling changes followed with Thornely picking up a useful edge, and Orla Montgomery getting chances for wickets which were unfortunately not taken.  Alexander and Reynolds Lewis were returned to the attack following drinks and wrapped up the tailenders, with Stuart Alexander taking 5 wickets for just 15 runs.

An excellent victory with a very young side, and it was pleasing for the progress of Women’s and Girls’ cricket in the West to see Orla bowling to Nadia who scored 19 not out for the home side.

Dumfries Sunday team back to winning ways

Croma Vigilant Dumfries Sunday 154 for 6 v Carlisle CC 124 for 8

Croma Vigilant Dumfries welcomed Carlisle to Nunholm for the Eden Valley League fixtures and got back to winning ways following a strong team performance.

Dumfries were put into bat and openers Adam Malik and James Little established a strong base for the team, when Little did fall, James Hobman was a solid partner for Malik who went on to score 50 before retiring. The lower order got into the action with valuable runs late on by Max Corbett-Byers, Sean Thornely and Callum Reynolds-Lewis. Dumfries pushed the total to a competitive 154-6.

Carlisle’s innings got off to a quick start as the opening bowling attack of Rory Thornely and Callum Reynolds-Lewis failed to hit their spots. Eventually though their line and length returned and the pair took out the top 3 batsmen in quick succession, Reynolds-Lewis (2) and Rory Thornely (1). The bowling changes were made with Vaughn Staples and Andrew Reed coming on and whilst Staples spin had the batsmen in trouble, the chances were not taken. At the other end Reed, bowling his dibbly-dobs was slowing the run rate down and that pressure told as he picked up a wicket. The final bowling change of Sean Thornely and Max Corbett-Byers had the run rate slowed down and Carlisle were looking at 8 an over to seal victory. This pressure told as both Sean Thornely and Corbett-Byer picked up two wickets each leaving Carlisle to finish 39 runs short of the Dumfries total.

Moduals Men of the match were: Max Corbett-Byers and Sean Thornely for performances with bat and ball.

Dumfries CC 13s get season underway with win

Dumfries 13s Sunday 87 for 7 v Wigton 13s 68 all out

Thirteens recover to post a respectable total and manage to defend it with more than respectable fielding and bowling as they opened up the league campaign with a win at home.

Catches win matches but only if the batting and bowling is done well.  Dumfries 13s got off to a terrible start with the top order being blown away, the first 6 wickets all bowled after playing poor shots and left Dumfries with only 36 runs on the board. Alex McMenemy, on debut, started the recovery but the hero was Munro Cubbon who was at the crease for 51 of his side’s 87-run total, showing his more experienced team-mates the art of shot selection defending the good ones, taking singles off the ok ones and smashing the rubbish.

But it would still need a good bowling and fielding performance to capitalise on Cubbon’s effort and steal a victory from such an inauspicious start.  An impressive Matthew McBurnie, with Katy Anderson proving an able opening foil looked good but it was Munro himself that made the breakthrough by means of a fine catch. Wigton’s reply was under pressure but it took another excellent catch, this one by Samuel Wilcox, to really get things happening; two more catches followed and a couple of run-outs capped a good fielding display.

Man of the Match: Munro Cubbon
