Dumfries Under 11s Debut in Competitive League

Carlisle Under 11s 261/2 v Dumfries Under 11s 234/7

Dumfries under 11s travelled to Carlisle cricket club to play their first ever fixture in the Cumbria league.

Captain William Middlemiss called the toss correctly and sent Carlisle in to bat. Carlisle started off steadily against the Dumfries opening bowlers Sarah Cox and Rukaya Hassan.  Tom Anderson and Roma Peniston bowled tidily without any reward. It was Cory Dawson who got the first wicket of the match hitting the stumps with an in swinging Yorker. Harith Hassan bowled well towards the end with his variation of deliveries, and Carlisle finished on 261 for 2.

Chasing a par score Dumfries started off very well with their highest batting partnership of Cox and Hassan (R). Dumfries were looking on track for a maiden victory, however a few wickets in the middle overs cost them as a wicket was minus 5 runs off the total. Captain William Middlemiss and Billy Morgan tried hard in the final partnership to get Dumfries over the line but fell short of the Carlisle total.

Highlights were Billy Morgans wicket keeping and Rukayas running between the wickets.  Everyone played very well for their first match of the season.

Player of the day went to Rukaya Hassan for her all round performance.  Dumfries Under 11s look forward to hosting Penrith under 11s this Sunday morning at Nunholm.

Dumfries on the wrong end of a close finish

Dumfries Sunday Development Team 102 all out v Stainton 103 for 9

Croma Vigilant Dumfries Sunday team travelled to Stainton, but were narrowly beaten by 1 wicket, in a game where the ball dominated the bat.

Dumfries won the toss and elected to bat but it was bouncy track with the Stainton bowlers bowling tight lines and wearing down the facing batsmen. Early wickets of Andrew Reed and Max Corbett-Byers gave the Stainton bowlers plenty of confidence. Sam Thornley and Sean Thornley put in useful displays to stop the rot, but Sam went next ball after a fabulous six as he top edged to the boundary and the fielder took the catch on the fourth attempt. Daniel Armstrong and Rory Thornley hit some big blows to get the scoreboard ticking, but again the bouncy track first of all did for Armstrong with a ball that did not get up, whereas Rory was dismissed, caught, after a swashbuckling innings. The innings came to a close with Dumfries all out for 102.

Dumfries went out in determined mood as they took early wickets, first Danny Armstrong dismissed the opener with a superb in swinging delivery clipping the bails and then took a majestic catch in slips diving to his left and snatching the ball out of the air for Callum Reynolds-Lewis to claim his first wicket of the day. Stainton were wobbling with 3 wickets down and not many on the board. However their batsmen did what the Dumfries team did not and buckled down and survived to keep the board ticking over. It looked like they were going to cruise to an easy victory with the score at 74 for 3, however step forward Sean Thornley who generated a lot of swing and picked up 3 wickets for just 10 runs. Callum Reynolds-Lewis returned to the attack and picked up 2 more crucial wickets and Stainton were suddenly 85 for 9. Nick Lancaster batting at Number 10 committed to his shots and struck a few boundaries and successfully pulled Stainton over the line.

The first outing for Croma Vigilant Dumfries Sunday Development XI saw many of the juniors deliver good performances and this bodes well for the season ahead.

Man of the Match for Dumfries: Sean Thornley

Inaugural Victory for Dumfries Under 15s

Dumfries Under 15s 98 for 4 v Wigton Under 15s 83 for 5

On Monday 29th April Dumfries Under 15s travelled to Wigton for their first ever match in the Cumbria Junior League. They scored 98 for the loss of four wickets, Wigton reached 83 for five after 20 overs and Dumfries won by 14 runs.

Dumfries got off to an excellent start with James Little and Fergus Bainbridge scoring 30 retired and 28 respectively. James finding the boundary regularly with his customary pulls and cuts, Fergus proceeded more cautiously, allowing James to race to his retirement and then accelerated, his last scoring shot being a glorious six over midwicket. Wigton put their county bowlers on in the middle overs and the run rate fell, so did some of our batters but James Hobman, at 4, finished 13 not out after a sensible innings.

It looked like a good score but Wigton began confidently with skipper, Johnston, looking set for a big score, however a mix up, and a fine bit of sharp fielding from Lewis Fergusson saw him back in the pavilion, run out for 17. Our bowling started well with Sean Thornely and James Hobman bowling tight lines at pace but neither got wickets in their first spells. Blackburn looked dangerous and was pulling anything short for four, he retired on 30 but a good catch by Lewis again at fine leg off Katy Anderson, a caught and bowled for Sean and a clean bowled by Vaughn Staples’ off-break dismissed the middle order for not very many. Some accurate bowling by the McBurnie brothers, Orla Montgomery and an over at the death by Max Corbett-Byers was enough to dampen any further momentum for Wigton and they finished short by 14.
