Both Dumfries Cricket Club sides mirrored each other with losses on Saturday dropping both teams from their top spot down to third in their respective West leagues.
In Western Premiership 2, the Dumfries 1st team, played the side in third place, Uddingston, at home. Opting to bat first, Dumfries set a total of 208 all out. Opener Stuart Corbett-Byers hit 30 but it required later innings of 28 from Alan Davidson and, in particular, 47 by 16-year-old Nairn Cubbon to reach a competitive total from a position of 109 for 5, but which still might have been higher after the batting comeback.
Davidson and Nairn Cubbon took two early wickets for Dumfries but a century partnership between Palawat and Ramzan seemed to have set up Uddingston for a comfortable win. Then, Tommy McGrath bowled Ramzan and induced another good catch by Dunbar to dismiss overseas player Palawat for 58. It then became a seesaw between wickets left and runs required as McGrath claimed another three wickets for Uddingston to be 189 for 7. However, the eighth wicket pairing negotiated the 20 runs required for a three wicket win in a tense finish and to move visitors Uddingston to the top of the league. McGrath was the Barbours Player of the Match for his five wickets.
In Western Championship 2, Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm, had a good start at fourth placed Ferguslie 2nds, Youngster Cory Dawson opened the bowling and in an excellent spell removed the top four batsmen for a high point of Ferguslie sitting at 40 for 4 wickets. However, Varunkumar was then instrumental in boosting the home team to a total of 200 for 7 with his score of 72.
Despite an innings of 46 by opener Lachlan Osmond the Ferguslie spinners took the wickets of the middle order and Nunholm could only reach 118 all out. Sultan Kamran was the other significant score with 26. Like the 1st XI team Nunholm slipped down to third place as a result. The Hidden Beauty Dumfries Player of the Match was awarded to Cory for his opening four wickets.
In the Eden Valley Sunday League, Dumfries totalled 174 for 6 at Lanercost. Lachlan Friend top scored with 55 not out. In reply, Lanercost reached the winning target for the loss of five wickets. Angus Middlemiss and James Cox took two wickets each.
On Saturday, Vigilant Dumfries play at Stirling in Western Premiership 2 and the second team, Nunholm, play Stenhousemuir 2nds at home in Western Championship 2. Those interested in being involved in some cricket over the summer are encouraged to contact the club via www.dumfriescricketclub.com.
