The Dumfries and Galloway Coaching Awards, in partnership with sportscotland, provided the opportunity to thank coaches for their dedication to their chosen sport and recognise their achievements. The aim of the awards was to celebrate and raise the profile of the fantastic work being done within Dumfries and Galloway and recognise the contribution and value of these coaches and volunteers.

1 a 1 a council sport 9Winners in the nine categories progressed to the Scottish finals with the national winners being revealed in a glittering ceremony staged by sportscotland in Glasgow City Chambers on Wednesday 19 November.
Dumfries and Galloway Young Volunteer of the Year, Lucy Thompson was named joint winner of the Scottish Young Volunteer of the Year Award with another young girl from Fife. Each award winner was profiled on the evening before being interviewed by sports presenter Jill Douglas. Lucy’s story included details of her  hours volunteering in the last 12 months with Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Annandale and Eskdale Active Schools and Community Sport Team, including after school clubs in multi sports as well as attending events and competitions. In addition to all of this Lucy runs weekly badminton clubs as well as studying for her final year of University.
Lucy who was chosen to carry the Queen’s Baton in her home town of Eastriggs and who volunteered at the 6 Nations Rugby, the Ryder Cup, and also at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Chairperson of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee Ronald Ogilvie said; “This is a fantastic accomplishment and Lucy should be very proud of what she has achieved. Volunteers are crucial to the sustainability of local sporting opportunities and she is a perfect example of the contribution volunteers make to local sport. She is the perfect role model for other young people and standing alongside Commonwealth Games volunteers and coaches as winners of other national awards at the ceremony was just reward for all her efforts.”
