Dumfries Youngsters Lead The Way To Defeat Appleby

For the second Saturday in a row, rain derailed Dumfries Cricket Club’s league fixtures.

The Nunholm home fixture against Meikleriggs in Western Championship One was cancelled. In Western Premiership One, Dumfries took wickets at Ferguslie in a late start and in a reduced 31 over-a-side match. The Paisley side were 188 for 7 after 28 overs when the match was also abandoned. Alan Davidson claimed a caught and bowled in the first over but it was over eighty runs later before Tommy McGrath removed Stafford for 45, also in his first over. Chris Brockwell then promptly took another in the next but overseas opener Mayet dominated the Ferguslie innings with his score of 94 before being caught by Staples off McGrath. McGrath took three wickets for the Ashleigh Building performance of the day and Vaughn Staples contributed a further two late wickets for Dumfries before the rain.

The Dumfries Sunday XI had a convincing 72 run win at Appleby in the Eden Valley Sunday League with fifties for Max Corbett-Byers, Wahid Jabarkhil and 40 not out by Adam Malik. Ronan Dunbar hit a further 35 not out as Dumfries reached 217 for 6. A youthful attack had Nairn Cubbon and Cory Dawson taking the first two wickets followed by three wickets to the spin of Harith Hassan. Dave Lightfoot chipped in with two wickets and provided the Nith Valley Cleaning highlight of the day with two sharp catches at silly mid-off. Juniors Lachlan Osmond and Bill Middlemiss gained some more experience with a useful bowling spell and a debut behind the stumps respectively as Appleby reached 146 for 9 after their 36 overs.

The Dumfries 1st team next play West of Scotland at home on Saturday in the Western Premiership. To get involved at junior or senior level Dumfries Cricket Club can be contacted on [email protected].
