FUNDING SECURES TRIATHLON DEVELOPMENT FOR STEWARTRY SCHOOLS

Funding Secures Triathlon Development for the Area

In partnership with the British Triathlon Foundation Trust, triathlonscotland has secured Celebrate funding of £7,000 in order to support and deliver a triathlon event and follow on triathlon activity for schools in the Stewartry.

The Celebrate fund was created to support new and existing activities relating to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

As a result of the funding, triathlonscotland and the British Triathlon Foundation Trust hosted an event for school pupils from primary four to secondary two (aged 8-14) at Kirkcudbright Academy, on 2nd September. A great way to give local kids a taste of our exciting sport, each pupil completed a mini triathlon where they will swam, cycled and ran their way round a short course, whilst being cheered on by their friends.

National Development Manager, Jane Scott said: “I was delighted to see so many of the Stewartry schools taking part and the pupils (and teachers!) having so much fun!

“We received a lot of very positive feedback and as such I am very keen to bring the event back again next year and give even more kids the opportunity to try triathlon.

“The event has been a fantastic tool to raise awareness of the sport in the area, and the focus is now on developing triathlon opportunities locally.”

As part of these developments, local club: D&G Triathlon Club are currently looking at and aiming to create a junior club section along with satellite clubs across the region.

Planning for the future is high on the agenda and events such as an in-house triathlon challenge is being considered to encourage and allow schools in the area to compete against each other, as well as providing the kids with more development and racing opportunities locally. As well as this, triathlonscotland’s National Development Manager, Jane Scott along with local School Sport Co-ordinator, Louise Couper will be researching future funding opportunities in order to continue and deliver similar events in the future in Kirkcudbright itself as well as expanding to the West and East of the region.
