Late Penalty Sees Plate Victory For Stewartry Under 16’s

Sunday 27th March brought the  West Youth U16 Plate final to Greenlaw, Castle Douglas, home of Stewartry U16’s Rugby Team, another glorious day for the Blacks to go up against Marr College.

With a 1pm kick off ,things got underway with Marr having the best of the early exchanges scoring a converted try just 8 minutes in, but the Stewartry fought on bravely holding out the next three exchanges and in the 18th minute scored a cracking try in the corner.
The half went on with end to end rugby, Stewartry having the best of the ball but alas no more points in the first half 5-7.

The second half got off to a quick start with Marr scoring their second try, no conversion however and their discipline was becoming undone, 12 minutes into the second half after a further 4 infringements, a deliberate elbow to the face saw the referee produce a red card.

With Marr down to 14 the mighty Stewartry made the most of it, Marr’s discipline was now out the window and they were giving away penalties on a regular basis, 17 minutes into the second half and Stewartry where over the line for their second try, with the conversion added the home team were level pegging. Another 10 minutes of seemingly endless penalties from Marr gave the Blacks a penalty kick at goal, slotted through the uprights, 15-12, Stewartry held on to the lead for the remaining 3 minutes and kicked the ball dead from the final lineout.

Full time score, Stewartry 15 – Marr College 12,
