More Hockey Fun Than You Can Shake A Stick At

Throughout last month over 400 Primary 4 and Primary 5 pupils across Nithsdale have taken part in a programme of school-based hockey sessions. This fun introduction to the sport was organised by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Active Schools and Community Sport team and delivered in partnership with Dumfries Hockey Club.

The programme introduced basic dribbling, passing and tackling skills preparing the boys and girls to participate in small-sided games. Pupils were then invited to an after school festival at King George V where they took part activities and games delivered by Dumfries Hockey Club’s junior coaches alongside Active Schools coaches and volunteers.

All participants received a voucher to attend a free session at Dumfries Hockey Club and were encouraged to attend junior training on Tuesdays, 6 to 7pm, at King George V for P4 to S2 pupils.

Councillor Jeff Leaver, Children, Young People and Lifelong Learning Committee Chairman said;

“Participation in sport at all levels is good for youngsters’ wellbeing and development, not only physically but also mentally. It is great to see so many pupils taking the opportunity to have a go at playing hockey and hopefully a good number will go on to be involved on a regular basis.

Well done to all the participants and thanks to those who organised and coached the sessions and thank you to the volunteers who help support activities such as this.”
