Queen Of The South Girls Under 17’s Launch Leauge Campaign With A Win

Queens U17 Girls

Queens U17s got their league campaign underway on Sunday with an away match against Central Girls in Grangemouth.  Central won the toss and chose to play with the strong wind behind them in the first half. Queens started the game well and played some good football despite the conditions, but it was Central who made the breakthrough when their keeper collected the ball from a Queens corner and launched a long ball up the park.

Aided by the wind the ball went through to the Central striker who shot home. Queens continued to play neat football & equalised after 33 minutes when great work down the right wing from Lois Geddes ended in her cutting the ball back from the line for Holly Ovens to score. The Queens defence held out until half time, with Sophie Ingram in goal making several good saves.  The second half saw Queens with the wind behind them.

Only 4 minutes had gone when Holly outpaced the defence to get on to a great through ball and roll the ball past the keeper. Queens were dominant now, with centre backs Bronwyn Davies & Abbie Dunlop mopping up any threats and linking well with the midfield.

Full backs Mya Meechan & Maisie Copeland were getting forward at every opportunity, linking up with Freya Brown & Rebecca McLellan on the wings. Cairn Houliston grabbed Queens’ third on 52 minutes with a neat finish inside the box, and Rebecca McCubbin added a fourth when she intercepted a poor kick out from the keeper, ran in on goal and finished confidently.

Eve Jackson was working hard in midfield, linking well with Amy Craik. Lois Geddes hit the post with a cheeky back heel, & Holly nearly grabbed a 5th goal for Queens, forcing a save from the Central keeper with a shot from the angle of the box. Central pulled a late goal back with a well struck free kick from just outside the box, but Queens saw out the game comfortably.

FT 4-2 to Queens, a very good result given that due to injuries and absences, 3 of Queens’ back 4 were redeployed midfielders.

Queens U15 Girls

Queens U15 Girls played their first game of the new season in Saltcoats on a wet and windy day against a very talented & spirited Kilwinning Side.  The first 10 minutes of the game saw Kilwinning take the game to Queens.

Kilwinning were first to every ball, dominating the midfield and looking dangerous in attack & they opened the scoring with a deflected goal.  Queens equalised when Abbie  finished off a great passing movement to fire home.

Queens’ confidence grew and the second half saw Queens, now playing with the wind, push Kilwinning back.  Sara put Queens ahead with a great shot into the corner of the net. By this time the three central midfielders, Tessa, Ellis & Sara had a stranglehold on the game with the wide players, Stephanie & Abbie, causing Kilwinning problems. Queens added two more goals, from Stephanie & Macey.  Player of the match went to Tessa who only recently joined Queens.

Queens Girls U13 Whites

Queens U13 Whites played Hamilton on Saturday.  In an entertaining game, the Queens girls played some good football but found themselves 2-0 down early in the match.  However they lifyed themselves to pull back to 2-2 by half time with goals from Poppy & Shannon.

Into the second half and playing against the wind, Queens created loads of chances, hitting the bar, the post & having a shot kicked off the line.  They were to rue these missed chances as Hamilton sneaked a 3-2 victory, scoring the winner with 5 minutes to play.

This was the first league game for the U13 team, with the players having moved up from U11s at the start of the season, and against a very strong Hamilton side, the girsl can be proud of themselves.
