Queens Ladies Lose Out At Giffnock

Queen of the South Ladies made the journey up the M74 on Sunday to face Giffnock Ladies in the League Cup 2nd round.  Queens got off to the worst possible start, conceding a goal in the first minute.  Queens responded quickly however, with Siobhan Hodgson equalising with a beautifully place powerful free kick from more than 30 yards, her shot ball dropping in just under the bar giving the Giffnock keeper no chance. The rest of the first half was quite evenly balanced with both teams creating chances, but play was somewhat frantic, as befits a cup tie.  Neither team could find the net again before the whistle blew for half time, and the teams turned round level at 1-1.

The second half was scrappy with Giffnock having more of the clear cut chances, and it took a terrific save from Sophie Ingram to keep the score level.  Giiffnock hit the woodwork and then took the lead moments later on 80 minutes, their goal looking suspiciously offside.  Queens refused to give up and with 5 minutes left midfielder Megan Masterton was brought down in the box to win a penalty, which Holly Ovens converted.  With extra time seeming inevitable as the teams tired in the intense heat, it was Giffnock who grabbed the winner when Queens were caught out with a quick free kick which allowed Giffnock to break down the right and beat Sophie Ingram close to her left hand post.  Full time 3-2 to the hosts.
