Shadows Stun Solway Sharks Ladies

On Saturday Solway Sharks Ladies welcomed Sheffield Shadows to Dumfries Ice Bowl for a Northern League Division 1 fixture. Solway Ladies started off strong and had been controlling the game extremely well in the Sheffield zone for most of the first period, so to go into the first break 3 goals down through two counter attacking goals and a piece of sloppy defending felt unjust.  Emma Johnson, Allison Brain and Chelsea Aheran were the Shadows’ scorers.

Solway Sharks Ladies 2 – 4 Sheffield Shadows

Sharks goals: Calvert (30) Nicol (37) Assists: Luke, Muir, Williams-Martin

The second period started off where the first ended with Sheffield’s Brain again getting a counter attacking breakaway to make it a 4-0 game. As the period continued, however, Solway gradually grew back into the game and finally got on the scoreboard at the midway point thanks to a power play goal from Lisa Calvert following good work by Victoria Luke (sponsored by Kellwood LED Lighting) and Mo Muir (Hazel Mair Therapies.) The Dumfries side continued to outshoot their Yorkshire based visitors and headed into the second intermission on a high when Charlotte Williams-Martin (Graham Black Skate Sharpening) set up Rebecca Nicol (Hitachi Construction Machinery) to score Solway’s second.

The third period saw Scotland’s only ladies league ice hockey team continue to dominate but the Shadows net minder Rachel Rawson was able to deal with everything that was put her way and the game finished 4-2 to the Shadows. This was an extremely disappointing result for the Lady Sharks after dominating so much of the game. Player of the match deservedly went to Sharks’ energetic Beth Milne.

Solway Ladies travel away to Sheffield this weekend and will be looking to right some wrongs before returning home to host league champions Billingham Wildcats at Dumfries Ice Bowl on Saturday February 4th. Faceoff for the Billingham game is 4pm and entry is by donation.
