Over £1000 Of Sports Grants Awarded in Annandale and Eskdale

Sporting individuals and sports clubs in Annandale and Eskdale have benefited through hundreds of pounds of funding in recent weeks to support sporting performance and club development.

Five awards for various amounts totalling £1,050 have been presented to individuals and clubs across Annandale and Eskdale from the Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee Sports Grants programme.

The 5 grants included: –

Dylan Holmes – Dylan Holmes, 16 from Gretna who has been coached by former Olympic Badminton, Anne Robertson since April 2014 received £150 towards new equipment, coach fees, hall hire, competition entry fees and travel costs. Dylan is now ranked 10 in Scotland at under 17 age level and has won many recent events in Cumbria, Durham, Tyne-Tees, Dumfries and Central Scotland. Dylan is pictured with Councillor Stephen Thompson, Chair of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee.

Ellis Dalgliesh – 18 year old footballer, Ellis Dalgliesh from Ecclefechan has recently left Glasgow Celtic Football Club to further her career at Durham Women’s Football Club. Ellis was a regular for Scotland Under 19’s during the elite round Euro Qualifiers in Ireland in March that seen the team qualify for the European Championships Finals. The finals take place in Northern Ireland during August where the hosts will play Germany, Spain and Scotland in Group A. The funding will support Ellis’s progression and assist with large travel fees associated with training and playing for Scotland. Lochmaben Bowling Club – Lochmaben Bowling Club received a cheque for £250 to help replace the seating benches that surround the bowling green. South of Scotland Tennis Championships – The South of Scotland Tennis Championships received a cheque for £250 to assist with costs associated with running the annual major tennis event in Moffat at the end of July. Pictured with Vice Chair of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee, Councillor Adam Wilson is Mike McMillin, tennis coach and member of the organising committee for the South of Scotland Tennis Championships.

Calum Main – Scottish Table Tennis Player Calum Main, 24 from Eaglesfield who studies at Edinburgh University received £200 to assist with expenses to allow him to compete in European and World Championship events as an individual and as part of the Scotland Squad. Calum has ambitions of being selected for the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and is pictured receiving his cheque from Councillor Stephen Thompson, Chair of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee.

Councillor Stephen Thompson, chair of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee, and Councillor Adam Wilson, vice-chair, said: “We’re delighted that the Council can support so many sports clubs and individuals from Annandale and Eskdale as they strive to develop and improve. Sports clubs play a vital role in our community and are behind many of the high performing athletes developing in Annandale and Eskdale. These sports grants show that even relatively small awards can have big impacts.”
