STEWARTRY BEAT LEAGUE LEADERS CAMBUSLANG

CAMBUSLANG 24pts STEWARTRY 27 pts.

Stewartry who have only played twice in the last ten weeks and frozen training pitches was not the ideal prepation for the Blacks to travel up to Glasgow and take on the league leaders.

 

Cambuslang won 15-14 at Greenlaw earlier in the season and with only a squad of seventeen players it was going to a bit of a smash and grab to come home with the points.
Cambuslang kicked off with Porteous taking the catch and Cammy Fenwick clearing to touch. Stewartry won the first line and Cammy and Muir made good progress through the middle. Stewartry also won the first scrum against the head this was a feature throughout the game as Stewartry dominated the scrums and lines throughout setting a good platform up scrum half Jamie Farquhar. Cambuslang kicked a ball to dead and Stewartry won the scrum Mosey kicking to half way. Cambuslang started to apply pressure on Stewartry and the referee got in on the act in ten minutes and yellow carded Ian Fenwick for a rucking offence. This gave Cambuslang the boost they required scoring the opening try and conversion. John Fisher came on for Andrew Kerr and three minutes later Craig Mosey kicked a penalty for Stewartry. A three on one attack on the right wing saw the Cambuslang centre score a second try and conversion 3-14 to Cambuslang. Fenwick and Kerr came back on after ten minutes. The Fenwick brothers and John Muir won a penalty which Mosey once again converted. On the half hour Cabuslang charged into the corner for a third try. The last five minutes of the first half Fenwick and Smith turned on the pressure and joined by Porteous as they drove into touch. Cambuslang Stand off received a yellow card. In the final minute a penalty scrum saw Stewartry drive over and Martin Smith Score the try .Mosey added the conversion half time 19-13 to Cambuslang.
Martin Smith and Alan McMorran drove deep into the Cambuslang half before Carson made a good tackle before Muir broke away again. Stewartry kicked a penalty to touch in the corner with Captain Tommy Cannon driving to the line and and offloading to Smith for his second try. Mosey again added the conversion. Stewartry lead 20-19. In fifty minutes Stewartry were up against it when Ian Fenwick received a second yellow leaving Stewartry to play the last 30 minutes with only 14 men. Cambuslang were over the try line but knocked on. Stewartry won a number of scrums in their twenty two before Mosey cleared to half way. Cambuslang were putting on the pressure they were stopped on the line penalised for chat
all Stewartry backs were tackling every thing that moved. With 13 minutes to go Stewartry were let off when Cambuslang shanked a kicked just fifteen metres out. Stewartry relieved to get away with that won the next lineout by Porteous and McCulloch before Smith Cannon and Muir won a penalty try which turned into a penalty try. Mosey again added the conversion. 27-19. Three minutes to go Cambuslang scored a fourth then knocked on over the line before the referee added an extra three minutes as Stewartry battled for a famous victory having played forty minutes with only fourteen men and upset Cambuslangs hopes of the title. Stewartry moved up to third place.
