Young Solway Sharks Stars answer Scotland and GB calls

Solway Sharks Juniors were delighted to hear that six of their players have been selected to represent Scotland at various age groups, playing for their country at the annual National Conference competition in Sheffield in May.

Cassie McGregor, Owen Rae and Bailey Thomson will pull on Scotland shirts to compete with the Under 13s team, while Scott Kirkpatrick and Gregor Mills will take spots in the Under 15s team.  Scott Rae, who recently made his senior Sharks debut, is the sole club representative at Under 17s.  The players all attended various trials and training sessions, competing against the best players from all over Scotland, and their skill and hard word has been rewarded with a coveted Conference team place.

Sharks head coach Martin Grubb said, “All the players should be immensely proud of being selected to represent Scotland. They must go through a challenging trial process, but this gave them all a chance to show their abilities both on and off the ice. The conference tournament in Sheffield will allow them to match themselves up against the best players in the country at their respective age groups and showcase their talent and abilities and it is always a tremendous experience for the players. The players who have been selected will all be vital parts of their respective teams and I expect them all to do very well at the tournament and we wish them all the best of luck and will be following their progress with excitement. ”

In addition to being called up for Scotland U15s, Gregor Mills was also named as a reserve for the Great Britain under 16s team – a great achievement considering he is only 13 years old.  Club Chair Leanne Thomson said, “We are really proud of Gregor, he works hard to be the best player that he can be, and it is great that he has done so well.  To be asked to trial for GB is a great compliment, and it is a massive achievement to be named in the squad.”
