Loreburn Confirms Progress At Stranraer Garrick Site

Loreburn Housing Association has confirmed its commitment to completing the re-development of the former Garrick site in Stranraer following the main build contractor, Stewart & Shields, going into liquidation.

The former hospital site has been in development by the social housing provider since January 2019 and has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and the knock-on effect of wider economic factors including labour and material supplies and the eventual insolvency of the contractor.

However, Loreburn this week confirmed their commitment to the intergenerational site and the steps being taken to ensure works can begin again as soon as possible.

Graham Robertson, Head of Development at Loreburn advised “Though this setback has not been welcome news, we are totally committed to getting the development completed and bringing these new homes and valuable community resource to Stranraer.

We’re working at speed to appoint a replacement contractor and to agree a revised programme to complete the development as quickly as possible.”

The redevelopment will see a total of 26 new homes being built; some with specialist design features while others will be dedicated to improving the accommodation prospects for young people in the area.

The first of its type in the region, the accommodation for under 25s will provide opportunities for employment, training and volunteering. Alongside the accommodation, the creation of a hub will offer flexible community space for a range of recreational and business uses. It will also serve as a contact point for Loreburn’s tenants and for others to access its range of services.

Clare Burns, Community Team Manager for the area added “Anyone offered accommodation is being kept up to date with progress. We’ll make sure there is the warmest of welcomes when we finally do get keys and will make sure the transition is as smooth as possible for our new residents.” “What’s most important is that we have a fantastic resource for the local community and look forward to welcoming everyone just as soon as the doors open.”

Loreburn expects the site to be completed by the end of the year.
