Competition Launched To Encourage Youths To Enjoy Local Heritage

CALLING EVERYONE in years S4, S5 and S6 for a summer holiday project which offers a prize of £250 for the winner!

Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian are running a Young Researcher competition for Years S4, S5, S6 or recent school leavers who have not yet begun higher education. They want to get youngsters interested in the local heritage of D&G.

The idea is that students entering the competition will write an original piece of work on any topic relating to the human history or natural environment of D&G. For example, you could research the career of a local historical figure; the history of a significant local building/monument; or a study – perhaps a census – of local wildlife; or the importance of an exhibit in a museum. Articles should contain between 1,500 and 2,500 words and may contain images, appropriately captioned.

The winner will receive a prize of £250 and his/her paper will be published on the Society’s website. This is great publicity for anyone wishing to go on to University as if you get a prize, or take part in the competition, you can add it to your university entry form.
The competition runs from 1st June 2025, with the deadline for entries being 31st October. This timing ensures that examination studies are not affected. Full details of the competition including the registration form and terms & conditions are available on the Society’s website under the “About” tab: https://dgnhas.org.uk
