Sarah Hastings from Dumfries has recently launched a brand new Facebook group ‘Geek Asylum Dumfries’ which is designed to be a safe community online for people across Dumfries and Galloway to be able to be themselves and be as geeky as they like without being intimidated!

In a Recent Interview Sarah told DGWGO “I created this group with the hope it becomes a safe community online for people across Dumfries and Galloway to be able to be themselves and share what they love. It started as a way for me to be able to meet new people locally that share the same interests as me. I am already part of other similar groups that cover the whole of the UK and some are worldwide, each having a different feel to them, some are more structured and have many rules and some feel like you are just talking to family and friends. I want to be able to mix the two, I want everyone to feel they can share what they want but will still be restrictive on content. It is a pg15 group so some swearing is allowed but anything indecent, hateful or political will not be tolerated.

The wonderful thing about geeks is that they come from all walks of life and there are so many different subjects that they geek out about. It can range from films and books, gaming (video and tabletop), a whole genre no matter the material and everything in between. We are very passionate, and welcoming and I would love to be the person that can provide somewhere that we can begin a community. With starting online, it makes it easier for anyone who may not be able to travel far to still be able to meet new people and make friends, with the hope of doing group meets in the future.”

Sarah Continued “The group is slowly growing, but I hope with more of a push we will become better known and hopefully have a bigger presence. I have already had someone join because they are moving into the area and are looking to meet like-minded people which I think is fantastic!
This is not a conventional group and is a bit more out there for Dumfries but if I had to stand outside in the cold to queue to get tickets for Star Wars the Force Awakens at the Odeon I know there are plenty of geeks within Dumfries and Galloway.”

“I am and always will be the optimist, the hoper of far-flung hopes and the dreamer of improbable dreams.”
