Kirkcudbright & Dumfries Rotarians Help With Mullock Bay Beach Clean

The local Eco Warriors Group obtained permission from the Range Control to have access to this large rocky bay where sea borne rubbish had accumulated undisturbed over many years. Rotarians from the Kirkcudbright and Dumfries Devorgilla Clubs agreed to help along with The Solway Firth Partnership and a group of Police Cadets which resulted in approx. fifty people assisting on the day.

The project required careful planning, as access to the bay was not practical for normal vehicles, meaning a walk in of about one kilometre.

Fortunately, one Kirkcudbright Rotarian offered to bring his tractor, plus a substantial trailer, which could easily be driven right down to the high tide mark at the edge of the Bay, thus avoiding long distances of dragging/carrying the substantial amount of rubbish (mainly plastic of various types).

The rubbish collected amounted to two full trailer loads, one of which is shown in the picture below. This equates to approx. 3 tons! Despite that impressive haul, it was estimated that double that amount remains to be collected at the more remote end of the bay, for which ability to upload the rubbish will present a challenge. Thanks also go to DG Council who arranged to take away the collection of rubbish.

In summary, this was a prime example of Rotary working in partnership with the local community.
