South Scotland MSP, Emma Harper, has praised the members of Dalbeattie Men’s Shed for their recent renovation of a 1950’s tricycle.
Convener of the Mental Health Cross Party Group, Ms Harper has been impressed with the efforts of the members of Dalbeattie’s Men’s Shed and has raised a motion in the Scottish Parliament to celebrate their work.
Dalbeattie Men’s Shed is free to attend and where men can spend time tinkering, repairing and making things while socialising with others who have similar interests. A larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place for men to feel at home and pursue practical interests with a high degree of autonomy.
The Shed is normally open Tuesday and Thursday morning for men to work at their own pace in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue and provides facilities where men from Dalbeattie and the surrounding area can meet to socialise and work with tools and equipment in a workshop environment. Currently due to restrictions in place to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, the group is physically unable to meet but have been speaking virtually.
The shed is targeted at those who live alone, are lonely, are disconnected from society, or have handicraft aspirations but lack the necessary inspiration, tools and equipment so retirees and carers needing constructive respite are prime candidates.
Activities undertaken by members support the wider community such as other charitable bodies, social prescribing and disadvantaged persons in the Dalbeattie area, by taking on DIY activities chosen to meet the skills and needs of the members.
Ms Harper commented;
“I’ve raised a motion in parliament to congratulate members of Dalbeattie Men’s Shed on their latest great work in renovating the 1950’s tricycle. Social isolation in our rural Dumfries & Galloway is a real challenge for many and the Men’s Shed has offered a wonderful opportunity for men to socialise together, sharing practical skills with wonderful, treasured outcomes such as the revival of this 1950’s tricycle. Just last month I contributed to a parliamentary debate on the subject of social isolation and loneliness and the many groups across Dumfries & Galloway who are inspiring people to come together and support each other and Dalbeattie Men’s Shed is yet another great example. It would be fantastic to see more of these groups emerging across the region, when restrictions are eased.
“Unfortunately, of course just now the group is temporarily unable to meet indoors due to the impact of coronavirus and the restrictions in place. However, I understand there is some virtual activity taking place and I am sure during this time members will be thinking about more interesting projects they can get to grips with upon their return which we all hope won’t be too far off in the future. For now, I’d like to celebrate their achievements so far and pay tribute to this wonderful piece of work.”
