Bold, colourful posters reading Communities become connected. Streets become stories. Pathways become possibilities. have been appearing across Dumfries and Galloway over recent months — in bus shelters, shop windows and public spaces. They are part of Moving Stories, a region-wide creative campaign led by The Stove Network.
Launched on 1st December, Moving Stories celebrates the everyday journeys that connect communities across Dumfries and Galloway from bus journeys to work and bike rides to college, to walking and wheeling along familiar routes — highlighting positive, real-life stories from people who use the existing transport network every day.
Dumfries and Galloway Council is progressing delivery of the transport improvement projects funded by the award of £13.8 million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund. These will include new multi-modal transport hubs, improvements to bus travel and upgrades to cycling routes. These developments aim to make greener transport accessible for residents and visitors as part of the development of an integrated transport network for the region.
“The posters were designed to spark curiosity — an invitation to pause during everyday journeys and reflect on how we move,” said Graham Rooney, Enterprise Director at The Stove Network.
Across nine communities — Annan, Castle Douglas, Dalbeattie, Gatehouse of Fleet, Langholm, Newton Stewart, Sanquhar, Stranraer and Whithorn — The Stove is working with local partners and creative practitioners to develop place-specific creative interventions, from sonic walking trails and youth-led biking projects to public installations, short films and story-gathering events.
On Monday 23rd February, the next Moving Stories film will premiere, focusing on bus travel and the role it plays in connecting communities across the region. Throughout March, further stories and creative work will be shared across the campaign’s digital platforms.
Moving Stories applies The Stove Network’s Creative Placemaking Approach, using creativity to bring people together around shared questions of place, strengthening community voice, collaboration and long-term community-led change
