World class performer, leading Scottish harper, and inspirational teacher Wendy Stewart headlines this year’s Annual ‘Summer Music’ concert at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Challoch, on Saturday, 4 July at 4pm. Admission is free of charge, with voluntary donations welcomed.
Not only will Wendy be performing at the All Saints’ concert with members of the Dumfries and Galloway (D&G) Branch of the Clàrsach (ancient small harp of Scotland and Ireland) Society, she will also be offering a fun-guaranteed bonus an hour before the concert begins: at 3pm, she will be giving visitors the opportunity to try playing a harp themselves. No musical experience is needed and harps are provided.
Commenting on her contribution to the 4 July event, Wendy said: “As members of the D&G Branch of the Clàrsach Society, we are delighted to be playing at All Saints’, and to share a programme of traditional and newer pieces.
“Before the concert, I look forward to giving people the chance at 3pm to come and try strumming the strings of this fascinating instrument, a form of which has existed in Scotland for hundreds of years.
“Having played for nearly 60 years, I see again and again the joy that comes from touching these magical strings and making beautiful music together.”
In addition to the harpers playing at the 4pm concert, talented members of the All Saints’ congregation will perform. All Saints’ is blessed with folk armed with an abundance of musical abilities, ranging from guitar, violin, euphonium, piano, organ, and voice. There’s something in the concert for everyone. The event concludes with a delicious, free strawberry cream tea.
All Saints’ Priest-in-Charge, Reverend Canon Stuart Bain, added: “The Bible tells us ‘for everything there is a season’. For this season, how about music at All Saints’ and a summer concert on 4th July, the 250th anniversary of Independence Day for our brothers and sisters across the pond? So, let us free up some good music and good tunes to lift our hearts and spirits.
“We invite everyone to come and share in the music and cream teas!”
All Saints’ Episcopal Church (DG8 6RB), Challoch, is situated on the A714 Girvan Road, two miles north of Newton Stewart.
