Sand & Deliver – Youth Work Does Beach Cleans

Dumfries and Galloway Youth Council, alongside the Council’s Youth Work Service organised and carried out three Beach Cleans in September as part of their commitment to tacking action on environmental issues.

The beach cleans took place at Powfoot Beach in Annan, Rigg Bay in Garlieston and Loch Ryan in Stranraer. The Youth Council arranged the event as part of the Great British September Clean which took place from September 11th – 27th.

Climate Change and the environment more broadly are a growing concern and priority for young people across our region and community clean ups are a pro-active way to help support our local environment and wildlife.

A total of 27 #LitterHeroes from Dumfries to Langholm, and Stranraer to Mid Galloway volunteered their time and were commended by locals and beach go-ers alike.

Dumfries and Galloway Council Environment Champion, Councillor Dougie Campbell said:

“Whilst it’s unfortunate that many of our regions beaches are plagued by litter coming in with the tide, it’s brilliant to see communities take this issue into their own hands. The Youth Council are one local organisation demonstrating their commitment to our local environment, alongside a range of eco and climate groups in the region and it’s promising that when possible, these initiatives will become more widely available for people to participate in. Thank you to our young volunteers!”

The Youth Council spokesperson said:

The beach cleans are the first of many community clean ups we’ll be running as part of our regional environmental project. The litter collected, where possible, is being repurposed and upcycled to be used in trash art projects for young people across the region. There’s loads of young people across D&G who are passionate about our environment and planet and we’ll keep our social media updated with what’s coming up for anyone who wants to volunteer”.

This event was organised in line with Scottish Government guidance and as a Voluntary Youth Work provision, group size was limited, and increased hygiene practices and social distancing measures were in place for all volunteers.
