New Young Parkinson’s café in Dumfries

Parkinson’s cafes are a new way for people with Parkinson’s and their families to get together to share experiences, find out more about the condition and discover what local support is available. Now dates have been set for a brand new café for people of working age in Dumfries.

The first Dumfries Young Parkinson’s Café is on Tuesday 14 May from 7 – 8.30pm at Neuro’s at The Crichton on Bankend Road. The second café will be at the same place on Tuesday 11 June, again from 7 – 8.30pm.

The café offers a new style of support for people with Parkinson’s and their families and friends in Dumfries and Galloway. It provides an opportunity for people to meet for a chat and also access support in an informal setting, and is scheduled to enable people who are working to be able to attend.

If successful, the aim is to make the cafes regular monthly gatherings.

Parkinson’s UK Area Development Manager, Chloe MacMillan, said: “Parkinson’s can happen to adults at any age, but it can be really hard for people who are diagnosed at younger ages because the condition is so strongly associated with older people.
“We know that some people, particularly those recently diagnosed, are reluctant to join formal support groups, and people of working age are more likely to be juggling employment, family and other commitments that make it hard to get to activities during the day. We want to provide an informal, welcoming, place for younger people with Parkinson’s to meet others, share information and find out about things that can make living with Parkinson’s easier to deal with.
“The café is an informal social gathering in an attractive and accessible venue that’s open for anyone of working age with Parkinson’s and their family and friends. There’ll be a wide range of Parkinson’s information available including details of the local support on offer. It’s hoped that Lorna Fraser, Parkinson’s local adviser for Dumfries and Galloway, will be on hand to offer information and advice.
“Please come and join us – you’re guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome.”
