Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) personnel in Dumfries recently received equipment designed to educate pre-school and early primary aged children in the basics of road safety.

Group Manager David Jardine, who is based in Dumfries, was delighted to accept the ‘Street Feet’ kit, which was donated by local businessman, Raymond Boyd, Managing Director of the Boyd Group.

The kit allows youngsters to practice crossing the road safely whilst being in a safe environment.

Children play the role of different road users allowing them to become aware of road patterns and their responsibilities.

Group Manager Jardine said: “This pack will be an invaluable asset for both SFRS and its partners in delivering road safety awareness to our youngest road users across Dumfries and Galloway.

“By utilising ‘Street Feet’ we aim to reduce the potential for injuries to nursery and early primary school children on our roads.”

Raymond Boyd explained his reasons for the donation saying: “As road accidents claim many lives and cause so many disabilities and injuries to children, I felt this was an ideal opportunity to help with the teaching of basic road safety to our local children.

“‘Street Feet’ is a great aid to doing this and I was more than happy to buy this pack to donate to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who will then go out into the educational establishments and get the message across to local children.

“It is a modern approach to learning the Green Cross Code”.

The first ‘Street Feet’ session was held at Laurieknowe Nursery.

Personnel from the SFRS Community Action Team attended alongside colleagues from Police Scotland delivered the session to 55 children.
