Dumfries’ Moat Brae Visitor Centre to Cease Operations This August

The Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust has announced that the Moat Brae Visitor Centre in Dumfries will close its doors to the public on 23rd August 2024. This decision comes after the Trust encountered ongoing financial challenges, including a reduction in funding and a decline in visitor numbers, alongside increasing operational costs.

The Trustees expressed deep regret over the closure, highlighting the significant difficulties that led to this outcome. The Trust, like many other Scottish charities, has experienced a sharp reduction in statutory and grant funding, as well as a drop in donor income and legacies. These financial strains have been compounded by a noticeable decrease in footfall, despite the efforts of dedicated staff, volunteers, and the support of the local community. The rising cost of living, particularly inflation affecting labour and property costs, has further exacerbated the situation.

Graham Edwards, Interim-Chair of the Board of Trustees, stated, “Every possible effort and option have been explored by the Trustees and staff of the Moat Brae Peter Pan Trust. Therefore, it is with deep sadness that we announce the end of operations.” He also extended thanks to the staff, volunteers, members, and supporters who have contributed to the Trust’s mission over the years.

The Moat Brae Visitor Centre was established to bring the magic of books and storytelling to life, particularly for young visitors. The Trust’s work aimed to inspire creativity and imagination, a legacy that the Trustees hope will endure even after the Centre’s closure.
