Junior Sharks Have Bite at GB Glory

Two local Junior Solway Sharks players are proud to be named as part of the Great Britain Under 16s Ice Hockey team for their upcoming international tournament in Madrid.

Ruairi Lockerbie (15) and Lewis Houston (14) are both in the Solway Sharks Juniors under 16s team, and are thrilled to be selected. Along with players from all over the UK they have gone through a selection process that started last summer, and involved extensive on and off-ice testing and trials, vying for a place in the newly-formed team.

This is the first official team named by the coaching staff since the formation of the under-16 programme last year, as a means of identifying players who may be suitable for GB teams earlier in their playing careers. The GB youngsters will come up against hosts Spain, as well as France, Germany, Poland and Hungary, from 1st to 3rd April 2016.

Solway Under 16 coach Jamie Kerr congratulated the boys, saying “Ruairi and Lewis are on the ice at every opportunity, they hardly miss a training session, and do extra work off the ice as well. They are both skilled athletes who really deserve this opportunity. Everyone at the club is delighted for them, and we wish them every success.”

The boys are both excited and looking forward to their trip. Ruairi Lockerbie said, “It’s a real honour and a privilege to play for my country. I’m really looking forward to going to Madrid.” Lewis Houston added, “I’m delighted to have made the GB team, it’s an honour to be able to play at this level. I get a lot of help and support from the coaches at the club and at the Loreburn Hall, and I will work hard to make them all proud.”

Solway Sharks head coach, and GB Under 18s coach, Martin Grubb added, “ I’m delighted for Lewis and Ruairi. Their selection is just reward for the hard work they have put in both on and off the ice. To represent your county is a tremendous honour, and they will experience a level of hockey they haven’t played before, but they will both have the skills and attitude to excel. It is testament not only to the players, but also to Solway Sharks Junior Ice Hockey Club for helping them realise their potential. Everyone is proud of them, and wishes them the best of luck in Madrid.”
