STRANRAER PENSIONER LOSES 15,000 POUNDS IN BANKING SCAM

Banking scam – Stranraer

In another scam in the west of Dumfries and Galloway a 78 year old man from Stranraer has lost over £15,000 in a banking scam which took place at around 2145 hours on Monday 6 April 2015. Similar to the lady in Newton Stewart who lost over £12,000 at the weekend, the scam involved the caller persuading the victim that his accounts were under threat and that he should transfer the money to a specified account. The victim was given detailed instructions how to do this. The victim in this case has become aware during the process that this may actually be a scam, but not before transferring over £15,000 to the specified account. The caller in this case said he was from Bank of Scotland Security, and that the victim’s accounts were under threat from someone trying to hack into them from Spain. The victim also had accounts with the TSB, and again has transferred money out of these accounts.

Police Scotland want to hear from anyone who may have been contacted by such a caller, whether they actually became a victim or not. Again the public are warned over the dangers of engaging with anyone who cold calls over the telephone in this manner.
